DESCRIPTION:D. C. Neckers\, a photoscientist\, started the Center for Phot
ochemical Sciences at Bowling Green State University (OHIO\, USA) in 1985.
The Center now houses one of the few Ph. D. programs in the photosciences
in the world. As of last July\, 17 faculty from four departments were pa
rt of the Center\, and ≈ 60 full time Ph.D. students were enrolled in Ce
nter programs. Neckers research interests are in photopolymerization\, pho
tpolymer science\, imaging and stereolithography. He\, his students and hi
s post-doctorals have published about 400 papers in refereed journals\, an
d he holds approximately 50 US patents. His discussion in today's seminar
will focus on the elusive group of aromatic compounds known as the poly(ac
 enes). .. i. e. benzene\, naphthalene\, anthracene\, tetracene\, pentacene
 \, hexacene\, heptacene ...[octacene]\, [nonacene] .... ... poly(acene)s.
As of this date\, heptacene has been synthesized in matrices only (to be d
iscussed) while octacene and nonacene are unknown.
