DESCRIPTION:Meiosis is the specialised cell division that gives rise to th
e haploid cells required for gamete formation and sexual reproduction. The
factors that induce cells to undergo meiosis vary greatly between (and wi
thin) eukaryotes and a meiotic trigger has yet to be defined in plants. He
re we propose to use a forward genetic screen to identify sterile mutants
in Arabidopsis that fail to enter meiosis at the appropriate time and plac
e during development. Fluorescent markers that selectively highlight meiot
icytes or the surrounding cells are being generated to better characterise
the developmental events surrounding meiosis. These will be used in combi
nation with a meiotic indicator (callose accumulation) to screen for mutan
ts with disrupted sporogenesis. By selecting mutants that exhibit normal e
arly anther (male) and ovule (female) development but fail to complete mei
osis\, we aim to indentify genes that are required for meiotic commitment
 in Arabidopsis.
