DESCRIPTION:One dimensional semiconductor nanostructures are an emerging c
 lass of materials that represent attractive building blocks for nanoscale 
 electronic and photonic devices.  However\, while inorganic materials have
  been explored in depth\, the challenge of fabricating organic nanowire- a
 nd nanotube-based devices has yet to be as comprehensively addressed. To t
 his end\, my group has recently developed methods both for high yield synt
 hesis of semiconductor nanowires and nanotubes based on conjugated polymer
  and small molecule organic materials and for assembly of these novel wire
 s into integrated nanodevices.1 We have successfully demonstrated key nano
 photonic properties at the single nanowire level that include polarized li
 ght emission\, polarizing energy transfer\, wave-guiding\, optical microca
 vity effects\, and optically pumped lasing.  Further studies are presently
  underway in areas such as nanowire- and nanotube-enabled explosives detec
 tion\, electrical conduction and photo-detection.  These devices may find 
 many opportunities in future applications such as nano-optical routing\, w
 ave-guiding\, emission and detection\, data storage\, sensing and near-fie
 ld optics.  In this talk\, details of results achieved within these themes
