DESCRIPTION: Mathematicians have always played a central role in the
making\, and\n breaking\, of cryptography. We also play a key role in
developing\n surveillance tools\, both for state actors and private
organisations. Thus\,\n we have several ways of enabling the infringe
ment of the privacy of\n others. We can do so deliberately\, by desig
ning tools to break strong\n encryption\, or indirectly\, by creating
systems and platforms which collect\n massive amounts of personal da
ta of individuals. And we can do it\n accidentally\, by being careles
s or sloppy in the way we store the data of\n others. In all of these
cases\, our work determines how much privacy people\n can have.\n
