DESCRIPTION:Multiple alternating zonal jets observed in the ocean are stud
 ied with an idealized model with imposed large-scale background flow.\nThe
  jets are maintained by the mesoscale eddies with mixed barotropic-barocli
 nic dynamics.\nThe eddies drive the jets by either Reynolds or form stress
 es\, depending on the direction of the background flow.\nThe underlying dy
 namical mechanism of the jet formation is illuminated with the linear stab
 ility analysis.\nThe mechanism is non-local in space\, and it involves int
 eractions between the unstable and weakly stable linear modes.\n
