DESCRIPTION:Turbulent mixing plays a key role in driving the thermohaline
circulation of the deep ocean. Field observations have suggested that this
mixing is locally intensified over the rough topography along the boundar
ies of the ocean. I will present new laboratory experiments investigating
the transport of salinity and tracer in a system in which one region is su
bject to intensified mixing and in which there are supplied salinity fluxe
s to the top and bottom surfaces. This talk will present findings along wi
th a simple\, theoretical model and discuss the implications.
