DESCRIPTION:This work derives physical properties for ∼10^5 most well-me
asured galaxies from 1 deg^2 in the COSMOS field. Their spectral energy di
stributions are modelled assuming a stellar initial mass function (IMF) th
at depends on the temperature of the gas in star-forming regions. It is fo
und that galaxies exhibit a continuum of IMF shapes\, most of which are bo
ttom-lighter than measured in the Milky Way. The change is strongest in st
ar-bursting galaxies and towards high redshift. Furthermore\, correlations
of the IMF shape with physical properties and morphologies provide an evo
lutionary interpretation with hints of distinct modes of star formation in
  galaxies.
