SUMMARY:How to form a rare-earth rich carbonatite\, and why that might be
a good thing - Sam Broom-Fendley\, University of Exeter

DESCRIPTION:Carbonatites are the premier economic source for the light rar
e earth elements (REE)\, which are crucial for magnets used in electric ve
hicles and wind turbines. In this talk I will outline an ore formation mod
el for REE-mineralised carbonatites\, briefly outlining how rare earth ele
ment concentrations are progressively increased through a variety of geolo
gical processes from initial melting\, melt evolution & fractionation\, hy
 drothermal overprinting ad finally\, weathering.
