DESCRIPTION:The IKKT matrix model was introduced as a constructive definit
ion of (some corner of) IIB string theory. We show that it also provides a
mechanism for 3+1-dimensional gravity on suitable space-time branes\, wi
thout requiring compactification of target space. The Einstein-Hilbert act
ion is obtained as a quantum effect\, which is expected to dominate in an
intermediate regime. At very long distances\, the bare Yang-Mills-type ac
tion is dominant\, leading to significant deviations from general relativi
ty at cosmic scales. Some aspects of this emergent gravity theory are disc
ussed\, including the appearance of higher-spin fields.
