DESCRIPTION:The coordinated movement of cilia is used by cells to manipula
te surrounding fluids\, with a notable and well-studied example being prop
ulsion by microorganisms. We develop a filament oscillator model that is a
ble to treat both emergence and propulsion simultaneously and use it to ex
amine the swimming of a sphere covered in thousands of cilia. To accelerat
e the computation of the fluid-structure interactions involved\, we develo
p a fast implementation of the force-coupling method (FCM) in which the ac
tion of the mobility matrix is split between a global\, grid-based computa
tion involving a modified FCM kernel\, and a local pairwise correction. In
the first part of the talk\, I will walk through the fast FCM solver\; in
the second part of the talk\, I will introduce the filament oscillator m
odel and present preliminary simulation results.
