DESCRIPTION:The notion of completely reducible (cr for short) subgroups of
an algebraic group G was introduced by Serre in the 1990s. Such a G-cr su
bgroup is a natural generalisation of a subgroup of GL(V) acting completel
y reducibly on V. Many general results were proved by Bate\, Martin\, Roeh
rle and others on G-cr subgroups. My research has focused on classifying
connected reductive subgroups of algebraic groups\, with complete reducibi
lity giving a polarisation of the problem into different flavour subproble
ms. After discussing these topics in general\, I will discuss ongoing work
with Alastair Litterick on how to use these classifications (and subgroup
structure information in general) to improve general results on completel
y reducible subgroups to small characteristics.
