DESCRIPTION:UK submarines have been measuring the thickness of the Arctic
Ocean sea ice cover since the mid 1970s. These data sets\, processed and a
rchived by the Polar Oceans Physics group of DAMTP\, form a unique time-se
ries in the study of the large scale sea ice thickness distribution in the
Arctic. We present the results for the full ice thickness and the pressur
e ridge distributions from the two last cruises of HMS Tireless in the win
ters of 2004 and 2007\, and review similar data collected in earlier voyag
es in order to evaluate the changes in the ice cover. We compare the subma
rine measurements\, which are made with upward-looking sonars\, with those
based in electromagnetic induction and satellite altimetry. We also discu
ss the conditions that led to the historical minimum of the summer sea ice
  extent in September 2007.
