SUMMARY:Shock and Impact Deformation: A Geological Perspective - Auriol Ra

DESCRIPTION:Impacts have shaped our world and the Solar System. These coll
isions gave birth to the Moon\, caused the extinction of the dinosaurs\, a
nd delivered the essential ingredients for life on Earth. High-speed impac
ts generate shock waves that suddenly subject materials to extreme pressur
es and temperatures\, producing extreme deformation. In this talk\, I will
  discuss recent advancements—from observations\, experiments\, and shock
physics modelling—in understanding the deformation of rocks under the e
xtreme conditions of impact loading and the large-scale planetary conseque
 nces of that deformation.
