es they face now (TBC).\n\nDennis Rodwell (Architect/urban planner/cons

\n\nTatiana Vakhitova (PhD Researcher\, Centre for Sustainable Develop
ment)\nSustainability in the World Heritage cities: introduction to the re
search (UK-based case-studies)\n\nHeritage plays an important role in a ci
ties’ life:\nit helps to shape a communities identity\, boost the econom
y through tourism and investment and allows\nefficient resource use (mater
ials/energy) in case of reuse/rehabilitation of the buildings. Still urban
\ndevelopment projects in most cases do not explicitly\ntake into account
all the values of heritage. Therefore we do not achieve the utmost in deve
lopment\nprojects from the potential social and environmental\nbenefits of
the historic environment.\n\n\n\nHeritage is in many cases perceived as s
omething that ‘complicates’ the project\; rather than seen as an oppor
tunity and advantage\, potentially presenting a valuable ‘historical fra
mework’ for\ndevelopment. Careful consideration of all the diverse\nvalu
 es ‘embodied in heritage’(scientific\, historic\, social\, aesthetic/a
rtistic\, besides ecological/economical) and its placement in the core of
the urban development\, are all\nargued to help the achievement of sustain
 ability targets.
