DESCRIPTION:The primary invariant for a family of curves is the\ncombinato
 rial description of `bad' fibers. When the curves are elliptic\,\nthe clas
 sification of possible geometric configurations (`reduction\ntypes') is du
 e to Kodaira and Neron\, in genus 2 to Namikawa-Ueno\, and in genus 3 to A
 shikaga-Ishizaka. In this talk\, I would like to describe a\npossible clas
 sification for curves of arbitrary genus.
