DESCRIPTION:We know from statistical physics that we need ensembles in ord
er to extract microscopic understanding of collective phenomena. We have d
esigned central-force spring networks to have a function inspired by prote
in allostery\, in which a strain applied locally gives rise to a comparabl
e local strain at a distant location. By analyzing an ensemble of networks
designed to have the similar response\, we find that the response is of a
topological nature and can be characterized using persistent homology. Ou
r analysis shows that allostery does not arise from discrete mechanisms bu
t rather a continuum. Application of the persistent homology analysis to r
 eal proteins shows similar results.
