DESCRIPTION:A central prediction of Einstein’s theory of gravitation is
the dynamical nature of spacetime\, and in particular the existence of gra
vitational waves. This comes about at the mathematical level because of th
e hyperbolic (wave-like) structure of the equations. In this talk I’ll d
iscuss the physical setting\, and demonstrate how techniques and results f
rom analysis permit the study of these equations through a worked toy-mode
 l example.
