DESCRIPTION:The focus of this talk is on the shock compression behavior of
  materials\, under different loading conditions (e.g.\, compression-shear
loading) and at the atomistic-macroscopic spatial scales. In the first par
t of the talk\, the role of solid-solid phase transformation on the dynami
c strength behavior of iron is investigated\, followed by exploring the ro
le of material heterogeneities on shock structuring along the mesoscopic-m
acroscopic material scale in particulate composites. Lastly\, a brief over
view of shock experiments at the atomistic material scale is presented inc
orporating plate impact experiments with both laser interferometry (contin
uum measurements) and in-situ dynamic Laue x-ray diffraction at the Advanc
 ed Photon Source.
