DESCRIPTION:I will outline the concept of social balance\, and its implica
 tions for network structure.  Previous attempts to quantitatively define s
 ocial balance have been based on somewhat ad-hoc metrics\, leading to inco
 nsistencies.  I propose an inferential framework and discuss practical and
  sociological implications.  This work is early stage – feedback warmly 
 welcomed.
