DESCRIPTION:A discussion of the behaviour of excavation support fluids in
piling\, diaphragm walling\, horizontal directional drilling and tunnellin
g with an analysis of the fluid properties that are important for each of
these processes. In particular the lessons that can be learned from the ev
olution of a new class of support fluid –PHPA polymer fluids\, which\, a
fter early failures\, are now widely used especially in piling. The semina
r will develop and update some of the themes from the 2022 Rankine lecture
 .
