DESCRIPTION:The Grothendieck ring of varieties is the free abelian group g
enerated by algebraic varieties modulo a ‘cut and paste’ relation. The
definition can be motivated by the study of certain numerical invariants
of algebraic varieties. After giving basic examples and calculations\, I w
ill introduce generating functions in the Grothendieck ring of various fla
vours. They are related to the Zeta function\, Weil conjecture\, and recur
sive structures of some moduli spaces in algebraic geometry.\n
