DESCRIPTION:While the basic principles of assessment are over 3\,000 years
  old\, in Cambridge it dates from 1887 when James McKeen Cattell obtained 
 facilities for its study within the Cavendish Physics Laboratory. This tal
 k will review its progress since then\, focusing on evolution in our under
 standing of the four psychometric principles of reliability\, validity\, s
 tandardisation and equivalence. The finale will look at the state of the a
 rt today\, where item response theory\, computer adaptive testing and the 
 internet come together to spark a new revolution.
