DESCRIPTION:I shall give an overview of the Cauchy problem\nfor the Einste
 in equations of general relativity\,\nstarting from early understanding of
  their hyperbolicity properties (i.e. the "wave" aspect of the equations a
 nd its relation to both local determinism and gravitational radiation far 
 away) and ending with a selection of some of the most important open probl
 ems in the field concerning stability and singularities.\n
