DESCRIPTION:Samples of seafloor rocks provide insights on processes at rid
ges and transform faults. I will present constraints on hydrothermal fluid
circulation recorded in ultramafic rock samples from the Gakkel and South
west Indian ridges. Petrographic and geochemical datasets for these sample
s indicate that fluid circulation occurred to temperatures >900C\, which s
uggests that seawater is able to circulate to depths >20 km. Hydration to
these depths implies that the oceanic lithosphere can be a significant res
ervoir of water from the time that it is created.
