DESCRIPTION:For most of Earth’s history\, soft tissues were rarely captu
red by the fossil record. Yet\, for a brief window in the Ediacaran and ea
rly Palaeozoic\, exceptional preservation of animal soft tissues was commo
nplace. Probing the genomes of a diverse array of microorganisms reveals m
etabolic innovations that substantially increase the decay rate of animal
tissues\, coincident with the decline of Ediacaran-style exceptional prese
 rvation.
