DESCRIPTION:We first study the coupling between the wind and an elastic ca
nopy and show that there is a critical speed above which the wind imposes
large deformations on the\nelastic crop\, which can lead to lodging. We d
iscuss the physics of the transition from small to large deformations and
show how it can be used to reduce lodging events.\n\nIn the second part we
show that there is a universal law of capillary rise in wedges (z ~ t<sup
 >1/3) and discuss its importance for the ascent of sap in tall trees
