DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, the golden age of ancient Greece has been the
5th century BC - the time of the Parthenon\, of the Athenian Empire and of
the defeat of the Persian invasion. But in this talk\, I want to put the
spotlight on the century following these achievements - a time in which th
e Greek world was turned brutally on its head from a world in which city-s
 tates\, and particularly democratic Athens\, were in charge\, to a world i
n which an absolute monarch - Alexander the Great - held the reins of powe
 r. I look at how such a change came about in a staggeringly short 80 years
\, and what an investigation into this world - 2500 years old - can do for
us today as we face up to the stresses and strains of the 21st century.
