DESCRIPTION:I will report on a (as yet conjectural) connection between the
  Seifert graph\nof an alternating link and its Homfly polynomial P. The fo
 rmula is analogous\nto a result of Thistlethwaite concerning the Kauffman 
 polynomial. It\ninvolves terms of P in which the exponent of the Conway va
 riable z reaches a\nmaximum. These are related to a previously unknown ver
 sion of the Tutte\npolynomial for hypergraphs. That new invariant also sat
 isfies a refined form\nof Tutte's Tree Trinity Theorem about planar bipart
 ite graphs.\n
