SUMMARY:Geologists make great Reservoir Engineers - Martin Towns - BP

DESCRIPTION:Reservoir rocks are the store houses for oil and natural gas\,
and determining their extent and properties is the first step in the eval
uation of a hydrocarbon discovery. But to turn the discovery of a natural
resource into a wealth creating business requires not only knowledge of r
ocks but also an understanding of the dynamic behaviour of a uniquely comp
lex rock and fluid system. \n\nUsing the principals of geology\, physics
and economics\, together with practical mindedness and good judgement\, re
servoir engineers integrate diverse sources of information to create optim
al development strategies for the development of oil and gas fields across
the globe. This is a story of linking science to business to deliver the
energy we all rely on.\n\nMartin will be joined by his colleague\, Andy M
alone\, who works as a development geologist. Andy and Martin have very ge
nerously agreed to host dinner or a drink after the talk for people who ar
e interested in BP. Anybody who is interested must e-mail me (sks38@cam.ac
.uk) in advance so that we have an idea of numbers. As usual\, refreshment
s will be provided\, everybody welcome.
