DESCRIPTION:Communication is crucial for engineering design teams. It perm
eates every aspect of their work - from discussions about product specific
ations to chats shaping social ties. While the power and importance of com
munication is recognised by many authors few dare to give recommendations
for practitioners.\nBuilding on previous research conducted at the Enginee
ring Design Centre (EDC)\, the aim of Denniz' work was to find recommendat
ions for improving communication related factors in engineering design tea
ms. This was approached by a systematic literature review\, spanning multi
ple disciplines\, such as engineering design\, management science\, sociol
ogy and psychology.\nFactors relating to communication are categorised int
o four: information\, the individual\, the team and the organisation. Reco
mmendations for managerial actions to improve each factor are evaluated ac
cording to their potential impact in terms of cost and benefits. Findings
from literature yield common sense answers but also include some unexpecte
d results.\n\nAbout the author: Denniz is researching for his diploma thes
is as part of the degree in engineering from the Institute of Product Deve
lopment at the Technical University of Munich. He has been working with th
e chair of Prof. Lindemann before. In parallel\, Denniz studied for anothe
 r degree in Technology Management.
