DESCRIPTION:In 1945\, Alfred Tarski posed the following question: do all n
 on-abelian free groups have the same first-order theory? It took over 60 y
 ears until Sela gave a positive answer to this question\, and the path tow
 ards this final answer is paved with many interesting (and sometimes lesse
 r-known) results and techniques. In this talk\, I will review some of thes
 e techniques and results\, many of which apply not only to free groups\, b
 ut also to other classes of groups exhibiting  negative curvature. I will 
 then focus on joint work with Simon Andre\, in which we utilized some of t
 hese techniques in the acylindrically hyperbolic setting.
