DESCRIPTION:Floer homotopy theory proposes to attach a stable homotopy typ
e to the geometric data arising from some version of Floer homology. A cru
cial ingredient in doing so is the concept of “flow category”. \n\nThi
s first (of two) talk will serve as a friendly introduction to stable homo
topy theory. I will explain the use of spectra in understanding generalize
d cohomology theories and also describe the Pontryagin—Thom construction
\, which will play an important role in the next talk.
