DESCRIPTION:The transition of plants from aquatic ecosystems to land >400
million years ago was facilitated by symbiotic fungi that provided mineral
nutrients to initially rootless plants. These mycorrhizal symbioses drove
plant diversification and have sustained until now. By viewing plant deve
lopment through a fungal lens\, we gain a comprehensive understanding of p
lant biology that integrates ecological and physiological dynamics at mult
iple scales. This perspective has profound implications not only for the s
cience of botany and mycology\, but also for practical applications in ag
riculture\, forestry and environmental conservation\, paving the way for i
nnovative solutions to some of today's most pressing agricultural challeng
 es.
