DESCRIPTION:The study of warped discs was once limited to the viscous accr
etion discs around black holes. Now\, high resolution observations indicat
e that the warping and breaking of protoplanetary discs is not uncommon an
d there is growing interest from the planet formation community in these e
ffects. Warping and breaking alter the evolution of the disc\, for example
by enhancing the accretion rate and changing the chemical composition. Ho
wever\, our understanding of the conditions under which protoplanetary dis
cs warp and/or tear remains far more limited than for black hole discs. I
will present the conclusions from our high-resolution simulations and disc
uss what factors affect whether and where a protoplanetary disc will break
and how this differs from the commonly referenced theoretical predictions
. Finally\, I will share some examples of observed disc systems that we st
ill can’t explain and suggest avenues for future research.
