DESCRIPTION:Can physics really be mathematically "proved" from first princ
iples? And why is this question interesting at all? The "mathematical trea
tment of the axioms of physics" was one of Hilbert's grand goals\; it rema
ins the core of mathematical physics and has been intensively studied for
 probability theory\, statistical mechanics\, quantum mechanics\, quantum f
ield theory... I will explain Hilbert's question and then focus more speci
fically on "the problem of developing mathematically the limiting processe
s [...] which lead from the atomistic view to the laws of motion of contin
 ua".
