DESCRIPTION:Branching Out Seminar Series\n\nProfessor Darren Croft - 22 Fe
 bruary 13:00 - 14:00 - in-person and online. Professor of Animal behaviour
Darren Croft of Exeter University is coming to SLCU to talk on his resear
ch into Family structure and social dynamics of Orcas (Killer Whales). His
talk will tackle two main questions (i) What are the mechanisms and funct
ions that underpin the structure of animal societies? (ii) What are the ec
ological and evolutionary implications of this structure? He has a long st
anding collaboration with \n\nthe Center for Whale Research in the USA\,
who are responsible for collecting one of the longest and most complete in
dividual-based studies of a killer whale population anywhere in the world.
Killer whales are one of just 6 species of mammals that go through menopa
use and working with this data\, he has examined how and why this unusual
life history trait evolved. One of our study populations (the southern res
ident killer whales) is also critically endangered and our research in par
tnership with the Center for Whale Research is examining how social factor
s contribute to survival and reproduction\, essential information needed t
o inform future management and conservation strategies. \n\nIf you would
