CONTACT:Dr Mark Leadbeater
DESCRIPTION:*Abstract*\n
In this talk\, Dr. Ghannam will share his group
’s work on liquid crystals (LCs)\, particularly for extended reality (XR
) devices\, highlighting their pivotal role in developing advanced applica
tions for educational and training purposes. He will also share his group
’s work on the integration of AR/VR technologies in engineering educatio
n\, demonstrating how these tools offer immersive\, hands-on experiences t
hat closely simulate real-world engineering challenges. Furthermore\, he w
ill explain how his team used sensors to gather real-time participant data
within VR settings\, offering a more precise measure of engagement than c
onventional surveys. He will also discuss the benefits of collaborative le
arning in engineering\, facilitated by AR/VR technologies that enable team
-based educational experiences. Lastly\, he will address future opportunit
ies and challenges in developing immersive educational experiences using A
R/VR devices.
\n\n*Biography:*
\n
Rami Ghannam is a Professor at t
he James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. He also
serves as Convenor of Postgraduate Studies and previously held industrial
positions at Nortel Networks and IBM Research GmbH. His research backgroun
d includes a PhD in Electronic Engineering from the University of Cambridg
e\, as well as an MSc from Imperial College London and a BEng from King's
College. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society\, a Senior Member
of the IEEE and a Principal Fellow of RET. He is Regional Chair of the IEE
E Education Society in Scotland and Chair of the IET Pedagogy in Engineeri
ng and Technology Technical Network. Rami Ghannam's current research focus
es on developing interactive electronic devices and systems that enhance l
earning and training. He explores how technology\, computer games and simu
lations can nurture cognitive skills and promote engineering thinking capa
bilities.
\n\n*Registration*
\nFor online attendees\, please registe
