 ’\, the (very large) groups of all possible symmetries of spaces like di
 scs or spheres.  For instance\, one can ask whether or not they are simple
  as abstract groups. In the world of volume-preserving symmetries\, someth
 ing unique happens in real dimension two\, connected to the `geometry of a
 rea’. I’ll try and give an overview of some of these results.\n\n
