DESCRIPTION:Abelianisation of (non-sporadic) mapping clas groups is known 
 to be finite. The Ivanov conjecture\, open for more than 25 years\, asks w
 hether the same holds for finite-index subgroups of MCGs. I will review my
  recent work with Vlad Marković towards this question. I will mention a r
 eformulation due to Putman-Wieland\, Magnus embedding\, and spectra of Rie
 mann surfaces.
