DESCRIPTION:We discuss the application of the Wiener&ndash\;Hopf method to
linear water-wave interactions with horizontal thin elastic or poro-elast
ic plates in a unified framework. It is shown how the solution for a singl
e plate can be computed straightforwardly using Cauchy-type integrals\, wh
ich avoids the need to find the roots of the highly non-trivial dispersion
equations. Furthermore\, the method is illustrated with some numerical co
mputations\, focusing on the evolution of an incident wave pulse which ill
ustrates the existence of two transmitted waves in the submerged plate sys
tem. The effect of the porosity is shown to influence the shorter-waveleng
th pulse much more strongly than the longer-wavelength pulse. Finally\, th
e extension to multiple plates will be discussed.
