DESCRIPTION:The systematic construction of string theory duals for (pertur
 bative) field theories\, such as Quantum\nChromodynamics (QCD)\, would be 
 a major advance in the quest to access non-perturbative physics.\nSymmetri
 c orbifold theories in 2-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) provi
 de a promising stage\nto explore new ideas for such a perturbative hologra
 phy. While they can be controlled with the rich\ntoolbox of 2D CFTs they d
 o share some basic features with their higher dimensional gauge theory \nc
 ousins. In my talk\, I will show the engineering of dual string background
 s at work in the context of \nsome symmetric product orbifolds. The constr
 uction ensures that the amplitudes of the dual string\ntheory inherently r
 eproduce the correlation functions of the two-dimensional CFT\, order-by-o
 rder in\nperturbation theory\, without requiring explicit computation on e
 ither side of the correspondence.
