 s of algebraic cycles -- the "higher ramification" and "Brill-Noether" cyc
 les respectively -- which are of central importance in the enumerative geo
 metry of curves. In this talk\, I will survey how recent advances in our u
 nderstanding of compactifications of the universal Jacobian have connected
  the two families and ultimately lead to their explicit calculation.
