DESCRIPTION:*Abstract*\n\nDespite a growing interest among scientists in e
ngaging with the public and the media\, we still lacks a genuine science c
ommunication culture. While communication of every kind is on everyone's l
ips\, we are still far from the genuinely 'intelligent' communication prom
ised by the advent of the 'knowledge society'. Technologies may be partly
responsible for this paradox. Having pervasive 'means' of accessing and ex
changing information creates the feeling that we are communicating better.
While this is no doubt true in so far as society is spontaneously generat
ing new and creative initiatives\, much remains to be done when it comes t
o the various levels in established institutions and organizations. We wil
l discuss other challenges science communication is facing today such as:\
n\n* Do we need science journalists?\n* New technologies: friends or foes?
 \n* Turning science into "mediascience"\n* Promoting the science-society d
ialogue\n\n*About the speaker:*\n\nMichel Claessens is currently Deputy He
ad of the Communication Unit in the Research Directorate-General at the Eu
ropean Commission. He is also the editor-in-chief of the research*eu magaz
ine of the European Commission. A scientific journalist and writer\, Miche
l Claessens has published 250 articles and 8 books on several aspects of m
odern science and technology. He is also professor of science communicatio
n at the Free University of Brussels.\n\nhttp://ec.europa.eu/research/rese
