DESCRIPTION:At this session of the NLIP Reading Group we’ll be discussin
g the following paper:\n\nRoser Morante and Walter Daelemans. 2009. "Learn
ing the scope of hedge cues in biomedical texts":http://www.aclweb.org/ant
 hology-new/W/W09/W09-1304.pdf. In Proceedings of BioNLP-09.\n\n*Abstract:*
Identifying hedged information in biomedical literature is an important s
ubtask in information extraction because it would be misleading\nto extrac
t speculative information as factual information. In this paper we present
a machine learning system that finds the scope of hedge cues in biomedica
l texts. The system is based on a similar system that finds the scope of n
egation cues. We show that the same scope finding approach can be applied
to both negation and hedging. To investigate the robustness of the approac
h\, the system is tested on the three subcorpora of the BioScope corpus th
 at represent different text types.\n
