DESCRIPTION:The Umayyad Empire (644–750 CE) was the first Islamic Empire
  and one of the largest empires of ancient and medieval times\, extending 
 over 5\,000 miles from the Atlantic Ocean to the deserts of\nwestern Centr
 al Asia. This talk explores the geopolitical circumstances that brought ab
 out the formation of the empire and the turmoil of the seventh and eighth 
 centuries which shaped both early Islamic religious tradition and Arab eth
 nic identity.\n
