DESCRIPTION:Dark matter below electronvolt masses remains strikingly unexp
lored. Axions and dark photons are sought-after targets requiring unconven
tional techniques for direct detection. Traditional cavity haloscopes deci
sively probe microwave frequencies but face longstanding obstructions at h
igher masses. This motivates novel instrumentation including the Broadband
Reflector Experiment for Axion Detection (BREAD). BREAD recently pioneere
d its first science results with pilot runs at Chicago surpassing astrophy
sical bounds on dark photons by two orders of magnitude. This milestone us
ing just one month of room-temperature data opens a new dark matter discov
ery program bridging astroparticle physics with quantum technology.
