DESCRIPTION:A paper machine is an adventurous and complex conjunction of m
echanical\, chemical and electrical phenomena. It is a very multivariable
process and yet it is typically controlled using traditional single loop c
ontrol strategies which are not naturally suited to comprehending and comp
ensating for the effect a number of input variables may have on each paper
quality variable. Consequently\, in normal operation many potentially use
ful control variables remain unused.\n\nBy reference to work undertaken on
several full scale commercial machines\, the seminar will consider some o
f the benefits for paper machine operation of employing multivariable mode
l predictive control and optimisation technology. These benefits include i
mproved machine stability\, better quality\, increased production and redu
ced use of energy. \n\nThe seminar will also discuss the objectives of two
recently initiated university-based research and development projects\, a
imed at better understanding the potential for MPC and optimisation techno
logy to reduce the very considerable amounts of energy used in paper makin
 g. Present indications are that at least a 20% reduction may be possible.
