DESCRIPTION:I started out as a lexicographer and have ended up\, to my sur
prise\, as a Digital Humanities RSE\, working principally on the MPhil in
Digital Humanities at Cambridge Digital Humanities. One of the challenges
and rewards of my job is working with students whose technical experience
varies between essentially none and a first degree in Computer Science. Eq
ually wide ranging are the topics the students research\, from\, say\, met
re detection in Greek tragedy to TikTok influencers. The MPhil is a humani
ties degree\, based in the English Faculty: you don't have to write any co
de and if you do we don't mark it\, which of course affects the way the st
udents allocate their time. In this talk I will discuss the ways in which
my career has (and hasn't) equipped me to do my current job\, the pleasure
of working on humanities projects with students\, but also how my prefere
nce for digital minimalism sometimes conflicts with my students' interests
