DESCRIPTION:Development involves the spatiotemporal coordination of molecu
lar and mechanical processes which\ngive rise to an organism’s form and
function. Billions of years of evolution has led to the emergence of\na va
st amount of complex and diverse life forms. Simulating the evolution of d
evelopment (evo-devo)\nis a powerful approach to understanding how develop
mental mechanisms are modified over evolution\nto give rise to this immens
e diversity of life. However\, designing and implementing software to mode
l\nthese multi-scale processes presents significant practical and computat
ional challenges. In this talk\,\nwe will discuss our experiences and stra
tegies in developing our own high-performance software for\nevo-devo simul
ations.\n\nWe will explore the practical challenges encountered in writing
and designing this software\,\nincluding the need to balance biological r
ealism with computational efficiency\, and ensuring that the\nsoftware is
both scalable and flexible to accommodate a wide range of evolutionary sce
narios. A key\nfocus of our discussion will be on the methods we employed
to write high-performance code capable\nof handling long evolutionary simu
lations within feasible timeframes.\n\nThe zoom link is https://cam-ac-uk.
