DESCRIPTION:The human genome encodes approximately 5000 membrane proteins
of varied sizes\, shapes\, and biophysical properties. To function properl
y\, most of these proteins need to be inserted into the membrane in the co
rrect orientation\, folded into their three-dimensional structure\, and as
sembled with partner proteins. How these membrane proteins are correctly m
ade is not well understood. Using a biochemical approach to study factors
involved in membrane protein biogenesis\, I will discuss an emerging and u
nifying model for membrane protein insertion and the identification and ch
aracterization of assembly factors that facilitate complex formation.
